Westworld Season 3: Release Date and Story Hints

Westworld Season 3: Release Date and Story Hints

Violent delights may have violent ends, but Westworld’s enticements are in no danger of being shut off, even after an aborted robo-apocalypse on the island of lost dreams turned it into a waking nightmare. Which is happy news for us, cowboy. Westworld Season 3 was confirmed early into the current season's run. And we're getting intriguing new teases about it to this day.

For example, atop Lisa Joy's previous tease of a "whole new world" of storytelling possibilities, Westworld showrunners Joy and Jonathan Nolan sat down with The Hollywood Reporter ahead of the Emmys to give some thoughts on the season that was... and the season that is to come. Among the most prescient comments, Nolan confirmed not only would season 3 be very different, but that it will offer the opportunity to explore the perspective of a species with a nigh-immortal lifespan. At that point, characters can start thinking about things in the span of eons as opposed to years.

"I think it's a radical shift," Nolan said. "What's compelling and appealing about these characters is that they're not human. As we said in the show, humans are bound by the same loops the hosts are, in some ways even smaller. You couldn't expect human characters to withstand and survive the kind of story that we're telling. The hosts have a different version of mortality, a different outlook. I think clearly with Dolores, as she's laid out, there is a longer view here, a larger set of goals. They're existential. They span eons."

This ties in with our previous theories about season 3 potentially expanding its timelines to include events hundreds, if not thousands, of years in the future. This was hinted at during the post-credits scene of the season 2 finale. Joy likewise calls season 3 an opportunity to "repilot" the series, and that includes the new direction taken by Tessa Thompson's character.

In the season 2 finale, Thompson's Charlotte Hale was killed with extreme prejudice by Dolores, who had then assumed her visage. Yet by the end of season 2, Dolores is back in a model based on her original body, and the Charlotte Hale clone played by Thompson was a mystery character. Joy also touched on what that could look like in season 3.

Says Joy, "So we always knew that we were going to do this reveal and let her expand into this new role. We have a very diabolical arc for her planned out. Part of the fun for the character will be self-realization. She will be realizing the things we know about who she is."

Westworld Season 3 Story

Showrunner and co-creator Lisa Joy has been talking about what we can expect when Westworld returns for its third season with Stuff:

“It’s going to be a whole new world. This series is about reinvention and scope. The first season was a more intimate look at the park from within the loops. In the second season, the hosts broke out of their loops and were able to explore more of the park. In the third season, they’ve broken out of the park itself. We’re in a new terra incognita. From the beginning, when Jonah and I were thinking about the series as far back as the pilot, we knew we wanted to explore other worlds in the park, and we also knew the one world we would start to see little glimpses of throughout the first two seasons was the real world, and that we would get there eventually – and when we did, it would be a whole new experience.”

And if you're wondering whether Westworld is going to go full Lost on us, Joy also sought to nix that notion in the same interview:

“We have an ending in mind; we’ve had it from the pilot. It’s very emotional, I think. I can’t tell you exactly when that ending will come… but I think for every season what we try to do is tell a chapter of the story that gives you closure and then opens a door to a new chapter…The overarching question of the series is, what will become of this new lifeform? So I feel it would be irresponsible to not have an end goal in mind.”

At the moment, no one can confirm exactly when Westworld will be booking its third trip back to the park on HBO. This is, of course, a curiosity for fans, since season 2 took well over a year off from the series’ freshman effort, debuting last month on 22nd April after season 1 first bowed in October 2016. Some even speculated that the long delay, which allowed showrunners Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy to perfect their ever intricate plots for the sophomore effort, is why season 2 didn't see that large an increase in viewership.

Westworld Season 3 Release Date

At the moment however, no one can confirm exactly when Westworld Season 3 will be booking its trip back to the park on HBO. This is of course a curiosity for fans since season 2 took well over a year off from the series’ freshman effort, debuting in April 2018 after season 1 first bowed in October 2016. Some are already speculating that the long delay, which allowed showrunners Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy to perfect their ever intricate plots for the sophomore effort, is why season 2 did not see that large of an increase in viewership (about 3 million viewers tuned in for the season 2 premiere versus the 3.3 million who tuned in for 2016’s series premiere).

So while it is still unclear when Westworld Season 3 will jump back into the saddle, we imagine that it might have a faster turnaround than season 2, given that Nolan and Joy have had a longer period to plan beyond the current season. It's unlikely we'll see a new season before summer 2019 at this rate, and it's possible that we might have to wait until the October release window that season 1 had to work with. For most speculate Game of Thrones Season 8 will finally return in April 2019, which is the month Thrones used to appear during every spring, but Westworld coopted this year.
