Tech powerhouses such as Apple and Google may have outdone Microsoft in terms of "star power," but it still commands many headlines in its pursuit of innovation.

1.Gainfully Employed

Microsoft now has more than 118,500 employees, which essentially doubles the total population of Redmond, Wash., where the company is headquartered.

2.Cash Cow

The company's most recently reported total annual revenue was more than $93 billion.

3.Sky's the Limit

Microsoft's 2011 acquisition of Skype Technologies for $8.5 billion was its largest to date.

4.Diversified Holdings

Other relatively recent acquisitions include:
  • Mojang (video games)
  • Adallom (cloud security)
  •  Sunrise Atelier (calendar apps) And, 
  • of course, Nokia's mobile phones unit

5.Rising Fortunes

  • Co-founder Bill Gates' reported worth is now $79.2 billion.
  • Current CEO Satya Nadella is worth $45 billion.

In 2011, Steve Ballmer (who was CEO at the time) said, "It is hard for me to be excited about Android phones." (Android is expected to command 45% of smartphone market share worldwide in 2016.)
