Wow, Some People Really, Really Hated 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi'

Just like the divide between the righteous and the Dark sides of the Force, Star Wars fans are torn over The Last Jedi.

Critics almost unanimously responded positively to the latest installment of the franchise, but some fans hated it as fervently as Anakin Skywalker hates sand.
While fans have mostly agreed — or at least argued quietly — about all things Star Wars in the past ("The prequels suck, but Ewan McGregor rules!"), The Last Jedi has become the most polarizing addition to the franchise to date.
So, what gives?
Warning: Spoilers Ahead!

Right now, The Last Jedi has the lowest audience score of any Star Wars movie on Rotten Tomatoes.

Yes, even lower than the prequels.
It's not every day that the critics like a big, glossy, blockbuster movie more than the fans, but The Last Jedi did promise to transport us to a fantastical reality, right?
However, take this information with a grain of salt because Rotten Tomatoes is far from perfect and other sites like IMDb and CinemaScore have much higher audience scores.

There's even an online petition with almost 40,000 signatures to have Disney remove The Last Jedi from the official canon.

"Episode VIII was a travesty. It completely destroyed the legacy of Luke Skywalker and the Jedi. It destroyed the very reasons most of us, as fans, liked Star Wars, says the petition.
The petition was created by Henry Walsh, a game designer, who has since said that he created the petition as a joke. However, its mandate has resonated with a ton of people.
I mean, even if fans manage to strike down The Last Jedi, won't it just come back as a weird swamp ghost? I'm pretty sure that's how it works.

It's hard to pin down exactly what's got Star Wars fans so ticked off.

There's a lot going on in this movie, and fans are super torn about what was good and what was bad.
Some fans disliked the new characters, others pointed to certain plot lines (people really hated that casino planet), and some hated that creepy milk scene with Luke.
A common complaint is that people were disappointed to have so much canonical stuff ripped out from under them. The Last Jedi wiped the slate clean and put us not far from where we started in A New Hope. Rian Johnson also clearly didn't care about your fan theories (Snoke? Rey's parents? Forget all that!), and that approach was jarring for fans who expected something similar to The Force Awakens
Also, a lot of people complained that it was too jokey, and I'm honestly wondering if those people have ever seen Star Wars. There's lots of modern humor in these movies, guys...

The Star Wars movies are some of the most beloved films of all time, and that's definitely part of the reason why fans are so up in arms about this.

The only thing we should be getting heated about is shirtless Kylo Ren, in my humble opinion.
But regardless of how you feel about The Last Jedi, just remember that it's never cool to call people out for not agreeing with your opinion. Let people enjoy things, okay?
Besides, we will always have the angry fish nuns, and no one can take that from us.
