These are the qualities that made yesteryear actress Savitri a 'Mahanati'

The upcoming Savitri biopic, directed by Nag Ashwin and starring Keerthy Suresh and Dulquer Salmaan in lead roles, along with Samantha, Vijay Deverakonda and many other actors, is one that is much-awaited.

Slated to release worldwide on May 9 in Telugu as ‘Mahanati’ and in Tamil as ‘Nadigaiyar Thilagam’, the film is said to chart both the professional and personal life of the famed yesteryear actress. Talking about Savitri, Amitabh Bachchan had once said, “Savitri was one of the first actresses with unbelievable spontaneity.”

In a press note, the filmmakers stated examples of ‘Ardhangi’, ‘Maya Bazaar’, ‘Kalathur Kannamma’ and many other films as proof. Apart from spontaneity, the actress was said to have an extraordinary memory, always remembering her dialogues and planning roles well in advance. According to the note, industry veterans revealed that she had never indulged in rehearsals before giving a shot.
Another quality of Savitri that was much appreciated was apparently her ability to maintain poise, timing and rhythm while giving her shots. Though, it cannot be argued that she was such a natural actor, her act of impersonation from ‘Mayabazaar’ is something that cannot be forgotten easily.
Above it all, despite the scandal that always seemed to surround her, Savitri was said to be professional, putting aside her personal beliefs if the scene called for it. A staunch Hindu in real life, she acted as Mary in ‘Missamma’, a deeply religious catholic girl who left the audience in awe of her. But above all, when one thinks of Savitri, one thinks of how captivating she was, convincing in every role she played, with a poetic beauty that felt her audience spellbound, especially as she danced to the tune of 'Ahana Pellianta'.

Considering it all, Keerthy Suresh has huge shoes to fill in her role as Savitri and Dulquer Salmaan when he plays that of Gemini Ganeshan. It remains to be seen how they will fare.
