Streaming Now: The Last Hour has a Super Twist

thriller meets supernatural in Amazon Prime Video’s new murder mystery series The Last Hour. Set in the northeast, it has familiar faces like Sanjay Kapoor and Shahana Goswami chasing a murderer while also taking encountering some inexplicable supernatural factors. It will be interesting to see how the show, executive directed by Asif Kapadia, walks the fine line between reality and the unbelievable.

The Last Hour (Amazon Prime Video)

The Last Hour, a supernatural crime series, is packed with heavy doses of suspense, mystery and unexpected twists and turns. The show stars Sanjay Kapoor, Karma Takapa, Shahana Goswami, Shaylee Krishen, Raima Sen, Robin Tamang and Mandikini Goswami in prominent roles. Arup, a newly transferred seasoned city cop (essayed by Sanjay Kapoor) is put in charge of tracking down a mysterious killer in a small Himalayan town. Unable to get to the bottom of the investigation, he ropes in Dev, a mysterious young Shaman (played by Karma Takapa) as his local informant, who has a secret gift of communicating with the dead in their last hour, to solve the case. Arup finds himself lost in a maze only to find out that there exist a host of hidden secrets that will change his life forever.

Our desi junta loves supernatural stuff, which is evident in the success of TV shows like Naagin. The Last Hour is a crime thriller series with a backdrop of the supernatural. The story revolves around shamans/jhakris who are found in India and Nepal. While we have seen movies/series based on psychic powers, what sets The Last Hour apart is a fantastic backdrop and heightened sense of mystique. Kindly note that our review is based on the first four episodes only... What's it about...

Mumbai cop Arup (Sanjay Kapoor) is transferred to an idyllic town in the Northeast, which has seen the murder of a Bengali starlet. The cop begins his investigations and comes in contact with a Jhakri/Shaman, Dev, (Karma Takapa). Initially dismissive of his spiritual powers, Arup realises that Dev is the key player in the murder that rocked the hilly town. The two join hands to catch the murderer and his accomplice. Why is someone so desperately after Dev's life? You have to watch the series for that

What's hot

The Last Hour scores hugely on its atmospherics. The snow-capped mountains, pine forests and winding roads of Sikkim provide the perfect backdrop to a mystery with elements of the supernatural. Kudos to the casting directors for finding talent that match the background of the story. It is wonderful to see this kind of representation. The writers have done a good job of fleshing out even the supporting characters. Sanjay Kapoor, Karma Takapa, Shahana Goswami, Shylee Krishen and Robin Tamang put in solid performances. The scenes between Karma Takapa and Shylee Krishen have very little dialogues but the actors convey a lot through their body language. Talking a cue from popular crime novels, the writers show an undercurrent of chemistry between the lead characters. Jayesh Nair captures the landscape beautifully and Mandar Kulkarni's sound effects are effective. You'll be intrigued to know more about the jhakris/shamans who exist in every hilly state of India.

What's not

Raima Sen has hardly anything to do in the first four episodes except being visible to Dev. From an cop dealing with the loss of his wife and dark past to his teen suicidal daughter hearing voices, at times it looks like the series has gone overboard with the psychic quotient. There are a couple of dialogues that highlight how the rest of India discriminates against people of the Northeast. The reference looks a little forced in the scheme of things. If you are looking for hard-core suspense and mystery, the first four episodes might disappoint you a bit.

BL Verdict

If you love desi supernatural, and are bored of the usual fare of naagins and chudails, The Last Hour offers you something pretty exotic and sophisticated. You will love the beautiful yet eerie setting, the performances and the battle of wits or should we say, shamanistic powers!
